
Course Description
This advanced course in the Objectives of Islamic Law (Maqasid Al-Shariah) provides comprehensive study of the higher purposes and wisdoms underlying Islamic legal rulings, based primarily on the groundbreaking work of Imam Al-Shatibi and subsequent scholars. Students will explore the five essential objectives of Islamic law: preservation of religion, life, intellect, lineage, and property, and how these principles guide legal reasoning and application. The course covers the methodology of identifying and applying maqasid principles, the relationship between specific rulings and their underlying objectives, and the role of maqasid in contemporary Islamic legal thought. Students will learn to analyze Islamic rulings through the lens of their intended purposes and develop skills in applying maqasid principles to new situations and contemporary challenges.
