Course Description
This foundational course in the Principles of Quranic Interpretation (Usul Al-Tafsir) provides comprehensive study of the methodological framework for understanding and interpreting the Quran, drawing extensively from the scholarly contributions of Ibn Taymiyyah and other classical authorities. Students will learn the fundamental rules and principles that guide proper Quranic exegesis, including the hierarchy of interpretive sources: the Quran interpreting itself, prophetic explanations, companions' understanding, and linguistic analysis. The course covers various types of Quranic verses (muhkam and mutashabih), abrogation principles, occasions of revelation (asbab al-nuzul), and the relationship between Meccan and Medinan revelations. Students will master the tools of interpretation including Arabic grammar, rhetoric, historical context, and cross-referencing techniques essential for accurate understanding of Quranic meanings.
