Course Description

This foundational course in the Principles of Islamic Jurisprudence (Usul Al-Fiqh) provides comprehensive study of the methodological framework for deriving Islamic legal rulings, drawing extensively from the pioneering work of Imam Al-Shafi'i and subsequent scholars. Students will learn the fundamental sources of Islamic law (Quran, Sunnah, Ijma, and Qiyas) and the principles for their proper application. The course covers the science of legal reasoning, including the study of general and specific texts, abrogation principles, and the methodology of analogical reasoning (qiyas). Students will master the tools of legal interpretation, including Arabic linguistics, the study of hadith authenticity, and the principles of consensus (ijma). Emphasis is placed on understanding how classical scholars developed systematic approaches to legal reasoning and how these principles apply to contemporary legal issues.
